BHARATANATYAM - Beginning level for kids age 7+
Mondays, February 11 - March 18 / 4:15 - 5:30 pm
Youth (ages 7 and up) are invited to explore the imaginative world of Bharatanatyam with origins in the ancient temples of India! KAMALA DEVAM grew up learning the classical South Indian dance form of Bharatanatyam right here in Berkeley with the pioneering dance couple Katherine and K.P. Kunhiraman. After establishing a dance successful career in the UK, she returns this winter to teach a creative beginners’ level Bharatanatyam class for kids at DanceVersity. In this 6-week series, kids will learn some basic steps from the Bharatanatyam repertoire, fostering full-body coordination with the use of gesture, footwork and eye movement. Creative themes will be explored through the lens of storytelling where students will learn meaningful hand gestures and facial expressions, enabling them to create their own danced stories for sharing at the end of the workshop series.
WHAT TO BRING: Kids are encouraged to bring a bottle of water, light snack, and dress in comfortable clothing. Class will be conducted barefoot. Parents are required to sign their child(ren) in and out and a waiver will be required at the first class.
NOTE: TEEN/ADULT Kalaripayattu class being offered same days 5:45-6:45pm under separate listing. Let us keep your child(ren) company while you learn ancient South Indian Martial Arts - $10 childcare available at the studio!
KALARIPAYATTU - Beginning level for teens/adults
Mondays, February 11 - March 18 / 5:45 - 6:45 pm
Kamala Devam is teaching beginners' adult classes in an exciting martial art form from the southern Indian state of Kerala called kalaripayattu. Kalari for short, this martial art has been described as the mother of all others, incorporating the fighting actions of animals found in India and moving in graceful, circular motions between fantastic kicks and flying jumps. Inside Kamala’s fun but focused teaching style, participants will become stronger, more flexible and have a great time learning a new way of moving. No previous martial arts or dance experience is needed. Come, get sweaty and enjoy!
WHAT TO BRING: Please bring a bottle of water and dress in loose comfortable clothing. A heavy meal right before class is not recommended. Class will be conducted barefoot.
CHILDCARE OFFERED - If you need childcare ($10 per child), please ensure your child(ren) has light snacks and homework, if that is what you would like them to work on. Otherwise, we will have activities for your child(ren) while you take class.
