Dance lessons in Front & Back Studios (included with admission)
Mood Swing Orchestra kicks off our second annual “Swing in the Fall” dances with its classic ballroom big band style. “Swing in the Fall” is Ashkenaz’s two-month series of swing dances with lessons taking place every Thursday in October and November. It covers the gamut from classic big band sounds to jump blues and New Orleans R&B. Discounted series passes are available. The series concludes with a Saturday night party with Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers on November 26!
Each night starts at 7 pm with a choice of beginning/intermediate dance lessons with Karen & Michael or a guest teacher (included in the ticket price), followed by the evening’s live band at 8 pm. Tonight’s guest teacher is Cheryl McBride, teaching Balboa in the Back Studio.Click here for more about all dance lessons, teachers, and performances in the series!
One doesn’t need a tux and gown to dance to the Mood Swing Orchestra, but the music presented under the leadership of saxophonist Michael Young is in the elegant ballroom style of big band East Coast Swing and Lindy Hop. Mood Swing has performed regularly at venues from the Claremont Resort to Bimbo’s. The band was launched in 1995 and was chosen as one of the best local swing bands in the March 1999 issue of “San Francisco” magazine. Trumpeter Peter Anastos provides many of the arrangements of classic big band dance hits of the 1930s and ’40s by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Xavier Cugat, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and Artie Shaw. The tunes are ageless: “Take the ‘A’ Train,” “In the Mood,” “Harlem Nocturne,” “Come Fly with Me,” and dozens more!
