In its first visit to the United States, Nigeria’s Rex Suru & Cherubim Vibes brings a fresh blend of Afro-roots reggae dance music. The group combines West African Afrobeat with Jamaican ska and reggae rhythms, and plays bandleader Suru’s all original songs, filled with spiritual, social and political themes. The vibrant sound comes from a full horn section, electric guitars and percussion. Suru, who now lives in Oakland, continues to perform and record with the band around its home base of Lagos, Nigeria. Suru originally came to the United States to attend college in Texas, where he picked up his first guitar, and over the past 20 years has returned home to play music, where various musical partners came together in Cherubim Vibes in 2012. This Bay Area visit allows Suru to introduce his full band music outside Africa.
In addition to Suru as singer and songwriter, Cherubim Vibes is saxophonists Olu Emmanuel and Chijioke Enebechi, trumpeter Dotun Phillip, guitarist Martino, bassist Udem Udoh, Alaba Babatunde on talking drum and Chikezie Johnson on trap drums, keyboardist Daniel George, and the backing vocal trio of Blessing Raphael, Martha Vincent and Grace.
