Dunun are played in many West African countries. This workshop will be on traditions from Guinea from the Kouroussa region.
Dunun drum, Dunun is a family of 3 drums ranging from the smallest size to the largest size, they are hand crafted and a rope tuned cylindrical rawhide skin on both ends they are play with stick and bell attached on each drum.
The name of those 3 drums are:
Kenkeni the smallest size Sangban the medium size and the Dununba the largest size.
Taught by Mabiba Baegne: Internationally acclaimed teacher, drummer & choreographer of traditional and contemporary African Dance. Born in Brazzaville, Congo. Initiated into dancing by her grandparents at the age of 8. In addition to her Congolese dancing she has studied West African dunun drumming with Grandmaster Djembefola Famoudou Konate in Guinea, and she was the first woman to teach this form in the US. She is also an acclaimed singer and has toured and recorded with Salif Keita, Grandmaster Djembefola Mamady Keita, and Samba Ngo.
