Anniversary Proclamation

CONGRATULATIONS
TO ASHKENAZ MUSIC & DANCE COMMUNITY CENTER ON THE OCCASION OF ITS
THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY IN MARCH 2003
WHEREAS,
Ashkenaz Music & Dance Community Center, a nationally recognized
non-profit music and dance organization, has been an embodiment
of the cultural diversity of Berkeley for thirty years; and
WHEREAS,
Ashkenaz was founded by human rights activist and folk dancer, David
Nadel who was tragically killed in January 1996; and
WHEREAS,
the Ashkenaz community came together to carry on David Nadel's mission
by raising funds to purchase the building and creating a nonprofit
organization to continue the important mission of Ashkenaz; and
WHEREAS,
Ashkenaz brings together people of all ages, cultures and lifestyles
by presenting programs that include folk, world and roots music
and dance and by providing a setting for community benefits; and
WHEREAS,
Ashkenaz supports and encourages local musicians and dancers as
performers and teachers and provides a safe and comfortable atmosphere
for people to learn, dance and enjoy music together; and
NOW
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that on behalf of the City of Berkley,
we are pleased to present the Ashkenaz Board of Directors, this
certificate of congratulations for their outstanding work and commitment
to providing the Berkeley community with a center that promotes
peace and harmony and builds friendships.
