Oldtime music originated in the southern U.S. and it’s become hugely popular all over, with a strong resurgence in interest among young people over the past few years. A rollicking up-tempo dance tune, a plaintive lament on the fiddle, an unaccompanied ballad, Appalachian gospel harmonies, a humorous song from 100 years ago – all this and more is encompassed in the world of oldtime music. A uniquely American blend of Scottish, Irish, African-American and other ethnic strains, oldtime music eventually evolved (in the mid-20th century) into bluegrass. The fiddle and the banjo are the main instruments, but you’ll also hear guitar, mandolin, banjo-ukelele, string bass, dulcimer, harmonica, jews harp, and even cello!

In 1938 in Kentucky, mandolinist Bill Monroe recast oldtime into what would be called bluegrass. This tightly structured, highly disciplined ensemble music often features rapid tempos, lightning instrumental breaks, and high, tight vocal harmonies. The Bay Area includes several nationally known bluegrass performers as well as many other talented groups.
