Ashkenaz Standard Booking Policies

1. Beginning in January 2007, Ashkenaz is implementing a student price of $10 or less for all events. This is part of our effort to reach a younger audience and appeal to the large student body in the Bay Area.

2. GUESTS: Each band member and roadie will be allowed one guest. The band’s personal manager will also be allowed in free. Please provide night manager with guest list prior to door’s opening; no changes to this list are allowed after music starts. All other requests for free admission (photographers, members of the press, etc.) must be approved by Kristen Sbrogna, booking & publicity manager, or the night manager prior to opening the doors.

3. SOUND: Ashkenaz will provide house sound amplification and lighting and the staff to operate all facets of the club. Additional equipment and engineers will not be allowed unless agreed upon prior to the day of show. Please be advised that Ashkenaz is a “live” room with many hard reflective surfaces and volumes must be kept at a reasonable level. Please work with the night manager and the sound technician during sound check to determine a mutually acceptable sound level. There is a limit on the sound; if sound levels exceed limits, you will jeopardize your chance of playing at Ashkenaz again. Ashkenaz is adjacent to homes and subject to strict rules regarding noise, closing time, and activity in the parking lot and on residential streets.

4. BILLING: No other bands or guest artists will play that evening unless agreed upon by Ashkenaz.

5. BREAK MUSIC: Ashkenaz will control the break music. Feel free to bring music that would be appropriate to play between sets; Ashkenaz will use it at its own discretion.

6. SMOKING: There is no smoking, drugs, or fire of any kind allowed at Ashkenaz. This means all forms of smoke, including incense and candles.

7. PAYMENT:

In most cases Ashkenaz is only able to offer door deals.

Standard Weeknight Door Deal: The band will be paid in the following manner: From gross ticket sales, Ashkenaz subtracts the house expenses (not to exceed $350.00 – see expense explanation below) and the band is paid 75% of the net.

Weekend Door Deal (Friday and Saturday Nights): The band will be paid in the following manner: From gross ticket sales (excluding the $1 surcharge per full price and advance ticket), Ashkenaz subtracts the house expenses (not to exceed $450.00 – see expense explanation below) and the band is paid 75% of the net.

8. Specific house expenses will be deducted from the gross ticket sales. These costs are fees for the sound technician, door person, night manager, and publicity costs to partially cover the cost of advertising and publicizing your performance. The sum total of these deductions is approximately $350 on weeknights and $450 on weekends. In some cases, fees for a dance teacher, an opening band or DJ and other expenses by the artists (such as hotel rooms, equipment rentals, or food) will be deducted as well. After expenses, the net door receipts are divided with the artist receiving 75% of the net and the venue receiving 25% of the net, unless otherwise noted. Door sales terminate the last ½ hour of the band’s performance.

9. TAXES: Band must have a completed and signed W9 and CA Form 590 on file to be paid. Both must have an address, SSN or EIN number, and signature. If we do not have current tax forms by the day of the show, we are required, by law, to withhold 31% (Federal) and 7% (State) of net proceeds due to the performer.

10. DRINKS: On a weeknight, the band will receive 2 drink tickets per member. If there are two bands, each member will receive 1 drink ticket. Weekend bands will receive 3 drink tickets per band member from the bar. IF there is an opener on a weekend, headliner will receive 2 tickets per band member and opening band members will receive one drink ticket each. Please distribute tickets among the band members. Drink tickets may be used for beer, soda and wine. Water is supplied to you free of cost. Please do not ask anyone but bar staff or night manager for drinks.

11. YOUR STUFF: All equipment and personal belongings must be removed from building immediately following the gig. The band will leave the dressing room as they found it.

12. PUBLICITY/PROMOTION: We strongly recommend that the artist or promoter print its own posters, leaflets, handbills, etc., and conduct its own publicity to newspapers, radio and Internet outlets. Please coordinate ticket giveaways to radio shows and other efforts with Joe Balestreri, joe@ashkenaz.com. Ashkenaz has a small staff and expects artists, bands and organizations to promote their shows.

To find out what Ashkenaz does to publicize our shows, please see Ashkenaz Publicity.

We request that you provide 3-5 copies of your CD for in-house and radio promotion. If you provide a music clip, we will gladly add it to our web calendar. We may also download a clip from your website to use on ours; please let us know if you wish us not to do this.

13. STAGE MAP OR PLOT: Band must send stage plot with contract unless we have a current stage plot on file.

14. MERCHANDISING: Band may set up and sell merchandise. Ashkenaz will not deduct a percentage from sales.

15. TRANSCRIPTION: Artist agrees that Ashkenaz shall have the right to make an audio recording of Artist's live musical performance of the engagement hereunder, the cost and responsibility for which shall be solely Ashkenaz's. Ashkenaz shall own the recording, together with any and all rights therein, including but not limited to the copyright in the sound recording. Artist agrees that Ashkenaz shall have the right to make this audio recording available on Ashkenaz’s web site for its own ongoing publicity purposes only. Notwithstanding the foregoing, Ashkenaz shall have no right to sell, lease, license, broadcast, or otherwise commercially exploit the recording in the absence of an agreement in writing to be negotiated in good faith between the parties.

16. MATERIAL: Ashkenaz is an all ages venue. All material and performance presented by band must be suitable for children. Ashkenaz retains the right to stop any performance that does not meet this standard.
