The diversity
of music within the island archipelagoes of the Caribbean is staggering.
It is almost true to say that there is a different rhythm for every
island. Jamaicans groove to the infectious beat of the Rumba, crowded
Trinidadian bars shake to the base heavy sounds of Soca, while the islands
of Martinique and Guadeloupe relax to the soothing melodies of zouk.
While the music of artists such as Mighty Sparrow, Byron Lee and Lord
Kitchener captured the international spotlight in the late 1950s and
1960s, a new generation of Caribbean superstars such as David Rudder,
Rupee, Kindred and Black Lyrics have burst onto the scene, blending
traditional sounds with rap and dance music.
