Drawing inspiration from Rastafarianism and traditional African Caribbean rhythms, Reggae originated on the island of Jamaica. Following in the footsteps of the Ska and Rocksteady crazes that swept the US and Caribbean in the early 1960s, artists such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, The Skatalites, and Toots and the Maytals popularized the sounds of Kingston into a worldwide phenomenon. During the 1970s, legendary record labels such as Studio One and Trojan, produced countless hits and classic rhythms that ushered Reggae into the mainstream music world. Today, Reggae can be found in numerous incarnations from traditional Roots Reggae, to bass heavy Dub, through to the lively beats of Dancehall. The music of love, revolution, unity and peace lives on.
